Aussie Snooker Comes to Town BY Lethal
The Australian Snooker Goldfields Open comes to the Bendigo Stadium and will be staged from 29th June until 5th July. This year Bendigo will host the event for the fifth year running and the tournament is a recent addition to the sporting calendar of Victoria’s outstanding major events and will give everyone a chance to see some real regional history from the Goldfields.
The Australian Open first started in 2011 and was Snooker’s first world ranked event held in Australia, won by England’s Stuart Bingham.
Games for 2015 will include 16 qualifiers, wild card players, and 16 of the top players in the Snooker rankings. The event will be seen by about 60 countries all together to watch some fine snooker. Players will compete from England, Scotland, Wales, China, Ireland, and Aussie Neil Robertson who came second last year will be desperate to make amends in this world ranking tournament. Some of Neil’s other recent achievements include winning his first masters in 2012, China Open winner in 2013, UK champ 2013 and he won WUXI Classic in 2014. Another Aussie to watch out for in the Open is Vinnie Calabrese.
Goldfields Snooker Open uplifts Regional Victoria’s profile of the sport whilst bringing with it talent from Europe and Asia and should attract both local and tourists alike to the city for the 7-day program. Snooker is a fast growing sport and Goldfields Open will be one not to be missed.
