Chatting with Heidi Moncrieff
Heidi Moncrieff is a name to get excited for! Heidi is a talented vocalist and musician who resides in Moama, NSW. The young singer enjoys all genres of music but loves Ed Sheeran, Johnny Cash and Hozier. Listening to her sing and perform you would be surprised to know that she was only 15.
Heidi started learning guitar at the age of 9. Her singing career began a little while later after selection by the Australian Children’s Choir in school auditions whilst she was living in Melbourne. Heidi then moved to the Echuca /Moama region and continued to learn guitar and singing.
Heidi Moncrieff now has established set gigs at the Moama RSL and jumps at the chance to busk or perform anywhere in Australia. She also performs locally for specific functions and at her school, Moama Anglican Grammar.
Seven questions we wanted to ask Heidi that pertains to her music:
- What is your favourite song?
Without a doubt – ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen.
- For our readers who have never heard your music, explain your sound in a few words:
Mmmmm… I would say kicked back, chilled, smooth and comforting.
- Do you ever get nervous before performing?
Depends on the crowd…I usually feel comfortable with my surroundings and just go with it. My Mum gets more nervous than me apparently! I do get nervous before my netball games though!
- Is your family musical?
Yes, my Mum plays and teaches violin and my sister is learning the cello. They both play at weddings together and in the Moama Anglican Grammar Schools Strings Ensemble. My Dad…supports us all! There is always someone playing music in my family.
- What is one thing you cannot live without?
Mmmm tricky question…. but would have to say my guitar. When we go away for a weekend or on holidays and I haven’t bought my guitar I feel lost. So it travels with me.
- Do you have any specific goals set for yourself in the next couple of years? (Music related or other goals.)
I am working towards getting more gigs in and around Echuca / Moama. I add a new cover song to my playlist each week. My regular gig at the Moama RSL has given me the opportunity to have a go at ‘request’ songs that I have not yet sung to an audience.
I am really striving to do well in school. Being more organised is the key, I think. I have school, netball, part-time job at Amcal and my singing gigs so there’s no time for time wasting! I am saving for my first car and nearly all my singing earnings go towards this.
- If you were given the opportunity to open for any artist, dead or alive, who would you choose and why?
Mmm, I wouldn’t want to open for anyone in particular but would love to have had the opportunity to sing alongside with Johnny Cash or Jeff Buckley…but you know, that’s not going to happen, unfortunately!
After chatting with Heidi, you get the sense this teenager is a sensible young lady with the world at her feet.
Her music education was initiated when her Mum, Marion, thought Heidi needed to learn an activity that meant she would be happy spending time with herself. Through music Heidi has found this and so much more. The therapeutic qualities music gives, enables this teenager to switch off from modern technology and plug into the fantastic benefits that music has to offer.
If you would like to hear Heidi Moncrieff singing, come along to the Moama RSL on the 20th June 2015. Heidi kicks off at 7pm.
