In the garden with Eden

April is the month to plant out vegetables for winter harvesting as the soil is still warm and they will have time to establish before winter visits.

Plant into your prepared beds vegetable seeds such as broad beans, beetroot, carrots, chives, garlic, peas, shallots, silver beet, spinach, snow peas and turnips. That little lot should keep you busy.

Also, this is the time of year to make cuttings. Take about a 10cm hardwood cutting such as Rosemary, remove the lower leaves, use hormone powder (if you have some), place the cutting in good potting mix and keep sheltered and moist and you will be rewarded with a new plant.

Don’t underestimate the beauty and diversity of Autumn flowers which I consider are some of the best, including such favourites as Dahlias, Echinacea and the Camellia. Equally there are some great natives that flower in autumn including Banksia, Correas and Lechenaultias.
