Pants Down Circus Rock By Corridor
On 22nd and 23rd May at the Eastbank Centre in Shepparton, Caz Walsh, Joshua Phillips, Hannah Cryle and Idris Stanfon – better known under the moniker “Pants Down Circus” – brought to Shepparton its second show since forming in 2011, with “Rock n Roll” performed to hard rock hits and anthems from the 70s and 80s.
Each member graduated from the Australian independent circus company, NICA (National Institute of Circus Arts) in 2009 after completing a gruelling 3yrs degree in Preston. In 2012 the ensemble won best circus award at the Melbourne Fringe Festival and came second out of well over 900 shows for the Peoples Choice Awards at the 2013 Adelaide Fringe. Their current production was premiered in 2014.
The show, a straight up 55minute set, showcases their unique individual and combined talents set to songs by AC-DC, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and other big name artists of the 70s and 80s era. The timing of the performers is set in absolute choreographed split second timing. Even the songs themselves have been re-mixed so it becomes a melding and weaving of the performers and the performance. Incorporating unbelievable balancing techniques including trapeze, swinging, body throwing, ladder and more. The body strength alone is amazing to watch.
What sets this show apart from seeing performers like this busking in big towns and city central malls is their comic relief. From the get-go with this show when Joshua walks onto the stage impersonating Angus Young wearing full school uniform – complete with rubber blow up air guitar – you know something strange is going to happen. From Marcel Marceau impersonations to the performer’s rubber faced expressions that includes the audience, it is all in the silliness and quite laughable. They don’t take themselves serious at all, which is ironic considering they all literally hold each other’s lives in each one’s own hands.
The crowd on the second night that I went to was definitely a mixed crowd of all ages, come to see the last night of a five week run. Next stop for these guys are shows in Germany.
